Auditor Recommendations for Lighting
When recommending changes to lighting, the auditor should consider the following:
- Does the usage of the space change throughout the year? If operations are seasonal, perhaps seasonal changes to lighting controls may be considered.
- Understanding how each space is used allows the auditor to recommend the implementation of (or changes to) lighting controls. Are motion sensors, timers or daylight harvesting applicable to the space?
- Lighting located in areas that are difficult to access may benefit from investment in longer-life lamps so they are replaced less frequently.
- Surface reflectance may impact lighting quality. Be sure to note if paint colors or finishes may change in the future, as this will change relative reflectance.
- What is the annual lighting cost? Does the cost of proposed recommendations make sense compared to the annual lighting expense?
- Providing high-quality lighting in workspaces also promotes occupant comfort, so this benefit should be considered in any lighting recommendations. Studies of lighting in buildings have shown that workers are more comfortable and productive in an environment that is carefully illuminated and where lighting controls are provided for individual and group needs.
